Sam has asked for a reference on the use of powdered infant formula for young babies. The 2 authors of the following study are from the CDC.

Bowen AB, Braden CR. Invasive Enterobacter sakazakii disease in infants. Emerg Infect Dis 2006; 12(8):1185-1189

The authors concluded that ALL neonates (infants up to 28 days of age) including preterm?AND full term infants be placed in a high risk category for ingestion of contaminated powdered infant formula and not be fed this product until after 4 weeks of age. The European Food Safety Authority also relates that neonates are not to be fed powdered infant formula. If they are given formula is should be concentrated or ready-to-feed.
