Barb, I so agree with you about the nanny money being better used to
pay a cleaner for the house. You can ask a cleaner to go to the
supermarket for you, or do the ironing, wash the car, or take it in
for its service, or clean out the cruddy stuff behind your fridge or
cooker...you can't ask a nanny to do this sort of stuff.

Among middle class mothers here, especially in London it appears to
me, there is a trend to hire a 'maternity nurse' for six weeks or so
after the birth, who live with the family.

They sell themselves by saying they will take over at night, and will
'get the babies into a routine'.

I have never taken a call from a mum with a maternity nurse where I
have felt the mother's bf was helped/enhanced/supported with this
arrangement. Quite the opposite.

Maternity  nurses are generally not qualified in midwifery, or, in
fact nursing.
