# ... a 4 mo old who will latch on at anything /---/ The problem is
that the baby is now on a nursing strike (nurses fine when laying down
in a quiet room /---/), and he doesn't tolerate mom fixing the latch.
/---/ asymmetric latch /---/ the baby will latch (=close his mouth) as
soon as the breast touches his mouth (lower lip), so he ends up
sucking on the areola instead of the nipple. #

Mom contacted me again today, and I promised to ask you ladies again,
I know it is holidays season. Left nipple is sore, and she started
using a nipple shield on that breast (her sister suggested). Mom has
given formula "a few times" during the weekend, due to pain and
because she thinks the baby doesn't get enough milk (diaper output is
like it used to be, she says, however). I sense she feels like giving
up soon - she told with her first child she lost her milk at 3 mo, and
she thinks it is going to happen again. She managed ok with the latch
problems, and I think she could manage the strike alone, but now the
strike is making the latch problems worse and giving her hard time.
She says baby opens wide nicely but closes his mouth too quickly, and
thinks there is no tongue-tie. I tried to encourage her lots and lots,
but now with the nipple pain, nipple shield and supplementing...

What is "wrong" with these babies who will close their mouth and start
sucking "too early" (nipple not yet in the mouth; inverted nipples
wouldn't bother this baby ;)), and what could be done about it??
