Post partum psychosis is a very serious situation that means that the mother
is out of contact with reality. The mother with pp psychosis should be
hospitalized, treated and observed so the she does not harm herself or her
baby or anyone else. Certainly this is a psychiatric illness and should be
treated by the professionals trained for this rare occurrence.
I have seen it once back in the 60's and the mother was treated with
electric shock treatment. (the therapy of the day) (. by the way it
worked for her and she was hospitalized for two weeks . Then came back for
outpatient treatment when she was stable. ( her family would bring the baby
and her other child to this facility after the first week of treatment for
brief visits. She had suffered the loss of her father during the
pregnancy. )
I think that EST is being looked at again for treatment today.
The need for a mother to receive the treatment might override the need
for breastfeeding. Assess her for engorgement and get a pump as needed to
relieve discomfort until she is stable then supervise her with baby . Let
the pediatrician know what if happening. I can't imagine that she has this
diagnosis and is free to come for a consult. Are you seeing her in a
facility ?
Let us know how it proceeds,
My 2cents worth
