i won't go into this at length, i would be surprised if there were more than
a few people on lactnet who are even familiar with anthroposophy and rudolph
steiner and waldorf education. i have never heard four months given as the
cutoff, but there is a widely believed *misinterpretation* (my opinion and
that of others) of steiner's indications about breastfeeding that leads many
to believe that babies must be weaned at 9 months. i think it is much more a
reflection of the time and the culture of the persons who wrote these
directives, because steiner did not say anything on the subject except for
this:
(paraphrased) my mother died when i was four, and i remember grieving a great
deal, partly because i was still breastfeeding when she died.
tamar can reply to me privately, i don't imagine that the list needs to hear
a lot more. but it is true that all sorts of branches of medicine are
misinformed about breastfeeding.
