I'm back...Lactnet is so beguiling. My observation is that in the first
few days up to about a week, "most" babies seem to only "need" one side and
then gonk out (ie:fall Sound asleep). Have you ever noticed that if mom
takes the baby off because it is "time to" that she can't wake baby at all
to nurse on the second side? Towards the end of the first week they don't
settle during "the burp", are hunting for more - dessert! Offer the second
side. I really subscribe to "finish the first breast first", without any
arbitrary clock watching. Encourage baby watching. Tell moms what to sort
of expect in their first few days. Do you realize how frustrated parents
get trying to wake baby up to nurse the "x" minutes on the second side?
They automatically assume they are doing something wrong. I have much
better luck with telling about "general newborn baby behavior" so they know
what to expect. It's so reassuring to them when their baby does the
"general newborn baby thing".
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ, USA
