Hi Kim
I presented a full day in-service a couple of weeks ago and this subject did
come up. I had a copy of Marsha walkers 'just one bottle' on hand
See
http://www.health-e-learning.com/breasted_web_articles/JustOneBottle/JustOneBottle.pdf

also spoke of normal glucose metabolism in the healthy newborn. For
reference see pages 10-19 of
http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health/New_Publications/NUTRITION/WHO_CHD_97.1.pdf
as there is always a question on 'what about babies who sleep to long?' etc

Linda Smiths book "Games and Strategies for Lactation Education" has some
great facts in it. I like the one:
"How much formula would a baby need to consume to get the same amount of
protein found in one ounce of colostrum?
About 16 ounces"
This book in invaluable for education.

They liked the trivia game. I gave out Medela pens that the rep had sent me,
for first correct answer. Then I gave them *all* a small box of 'Smarties'
for being so smart! They like getting prizes.
They liked the case studies which I just made up, which they did in groups
and then presented to the whole group. I just added a few comments.
I also set up a board with jokes about breastfeeding, funny photos (eg
"lactating Barbie") and interesting articles. There was a busy bit of
photocopying going on!

What I did learn is have plan B ready (and Plan C and D)! The person I was
sharing the day with called in sick at 5pm the night before so I has to do
her topics as well. Nothing like flying by the seat of your pants. The room
we had set up was occupied by a patient in isolation for query SARS, so when
we arrived the morning of the 'education day' we had to find somewhere else
to go. Found an area but then workmen arrived to start renovating on our new
library. Yelling above the hammering did not work! So off we moved again!
I had no voice left by the end of the day, But really enjoyed doing it!
Good luck!
