Dear Fio,

What is going on with the baby is that he is starving and so naturally the doctor is eager to put a stop to that situation. I can't really argue with giving formula to a baby who is below birthweight 8 weeks out - regardless of what the underlying problem is, this baby needs to be fed and now and it doesn't really matter much how the food gets into him. There are so many things that could be going on here, but "FEED THE BABY" would be the first step. If the mom wants to find an IBCLC, she can go to www.ilca.org and hit the button for "Find a Lactation Consultan" but I can't imagine any LC not insisting on getting additional food into the baby as Step #1.
Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
