TTN- Transient tachypnia (fast breathing)of the newborn (AKA: TTNB) is
common admission diagnosis in the NICU. Can sometimes be referred to as
DTEUL- Delayed transition to extrauterine life, as it is believed it is a
benign condition related to excess "fluid" remaining in lungs at birth. All
these infants though are suspect and tested for other pathologic conditions
such as sepsis, pnuemonia, cardiac anomalies, etc.  There is fear of
aspiration if allowed to feed when respirations are >60 /min, although I
have seen our neonatologists relent and allow breastfeeding (slower- infant
controlled flow) if infant vigorously active, acting hungry, and
respirations normalize while sucking.
