What babies and mothers DO is not the same as what people "see" (consciously
and unconsciously) in images of the mother-baby dyad. Artists get masters'
degrees in the symbolism of visual images.  My sister is a professor of fine
art, and has gradually taught me that what I see clinically may be very
different from a message conveyed by a picture, sculpture, or moving image.
