Dear Friends:
Back in the 1990s, there were plenty of non-peer "peer counselors" at
WIC. These were white women needing clinical hours to sit the exam. While the
advice and help they gave was useful, I always wondered what the impact of a
well-off woman (whose current concern was the state of the renovations in her
living room) was on a poor woman whose current concern was having heat in her
apartment. It wasn't truly peer counseling. There were plenty of non-white,
lower SES women who could have been peer counselors.
    warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE
