Are milk thistle and blessed thistle different?, asks Judy.

Yes they are different herbs. Milk thistle (Silybum miranum) is used as a
liver cleanser but also a favorite galactagogue of Tierna Low Dog, MD (what I've
heard from others who've heard her speak). Blessed thistle (cnicus
benedictus) is "an appetitie stimulant which stimulates secretion of saliva and gastric
juices," Sheila Humphrey's The Nursing Mother's Herbal. Either
motherlove.com or birthandbreastfeeding.com have brief synopsis of these herbs (run by
Kathryn Cox and Mechell Turner-both herbalists-respectively.).
