This comment reminded me of a time a former Marine classmate of mine darn near got knocked flat when he went into a store in England looking for a pair of short pants and asked the sales clerk if he could see her "knickers" (in American that's what they're called, but in England it's a term for underwear!) Same guy had trouble when a pub-mate asked if he'd like a fag (cigarette in England, gay person in American). I believe it was Mark Twain who said England and America are two countries separated by a common language...

To keep this on topic, I used to talk about how puppies & kittens at birth could crawl up and find a teat to latch on. Then I noticed I was "losing" a part of my audience when I said this, and figured it out when one student wrote on the eval that she did not like my using offensive words like "tit" in class. Sooooo, now I just say nipple for either animal or human teats!

Smiles,

Carol
