Hi Jennifer,

I'm not from outside the US but I have come to use the term "maternal  
nursing" very often instead of "nursing" or "breastfeeding".
Like you I dislike the word breastfeeding because it is a variation  
on "bottle-feeding" and I have especially disliked it since LLL tried  
to redefine "breastfeeding" to include bottle-feeding human milk by a  
mother substitute...but "nursing" confuses people who are more  
familiar with RNs than nursing mothers so "Maternal Nursing" fits the  
bill for me.
