I don't normally post but thought I had better jump in on this one. I am the
list owner of [log in to unmask], the list Melisa mentioned. As a breast
feeding educator, long term nursing mom, and a Pedi ICU nurse, I became a
victim of a child with Sensory integration dysfunction. My experience was
that she could not stand any close contact. Coupled with a very poor suck
and low tone facial muscles(later diagnosed with CP), this made nursing
impossible. I am part of the long term pumping population that was
discussed. Nursing was just not going to happen with this baby

Mine never tolerating baby wearing, no co sleeping, but did do initial
Kangaroo care well(30 weeker). SID is very devastating to the parents. What
we normally associate with bonding, some of these babies just cannot stand.
SID comes in several forms, hypersensitive, hyposensitize and mixed
sensitivities. IT is defined as the inability to appropriately process and
react to outside stimuli. The sensory systems are comprised as tactile,
vestibular, proprioceptive, auditory, and visual. All five of these must
work cohesively for the child to adapt to their environment.

Many (most) children with autism spectrum disorders have SID, but not all
children with SID have ASD's. The mom's tend to take a hit with it, get lots
advice that it is their parenting style, permissiveness etc that causes
these difficulties. An appropriately trained occupational therapist is the
answer. Our web site has lots of info, www.kid-power.com/sid.html

Please feel free to email me privately for questions, help etc.

Barb, Mom to Mallory (spastic diplegia CP, complex partial seizures, sensory
integration dysfunction, Asperger's Disorder), Mackenzie ( too smart for
me), Katy ( growing up way too fast)
