Hello, All.
I have been contacted by a nearby Health Department. They are working
with a pregnant woman whose baby's intestines are outside the body. They are
talking to this mom about the importance of breastfeeding/breastmilk for the
baby. But this mother wants something in writing about why it would be good
for her baby for her to go to the trouble of breastfeeding/providing
breastmilk.
Of course, we all know the generalities. But the closest thing I have
been able to find to address this specific issue is a little bit in the
newest Riordan about imperforate anus: "The normally loose stools of the breastfed
infant lessen the risk of constipation with subsequent breakdown of the
surgical area and local infection." Although it's not the same condition, I figure
it might be close enough to apply in the eyes of this mother. I have checked
the latest LLL BAB, WOMANLY ART, and Lawrence & Lawrence, but couldn't find
anything about why breastmilk would be good for this particuar baby with this
particular baby. My vision problems still limit the amount of online research
I can do. Do any of you have other information I could share with this
mother?
       Thanks.
