Re: Helen Ball's post: "In the UK the nationwide CESDI study found a
12x risk of SIDS in babies who bed-shared with parent(s)who smoked
compared to babies who bed-shared with parents who didn't smoke..."

My question: What is the figure for the increase in risk of SIDS for
breastfed babies who bed-share with parents who smoke compared to
breastfed babies of parents who smoked who didn't bed-share? This is
the figure I believe I need to supply to patients who choose to smoke
anyway, since it is bed-sharing, not smoking, that most consider
optional.

Re: Judy Ritchie's post: "Why would a baby be put skin to skin to
sleep with a mother who oozes tobacco smoke smell?"

My answer: Because being touched by one's mother, no matter how she
smells, is the highest desire of the human infant. Smoking is
regrettable, but lack of intimacy is devastating. Besides, for these
infants, tobacco smoke is essence of "mom."

The question, sad as it is, is which of two profound and terrible risks
is preferable in any particular situation. All we can do is try to
measure and describe the risk so the mother can choose her behavior
accordingly.
