Loretta describes a case of a baby with blood in stools and "itchy" face and other behaviors. I would echo Kate Hallberg's advice about checking for ALL forms of dairy. The "itchy" face sounds like eczema and isn't that tied also to dairy proteins, sometimes even to ingestion of beef? Of course,
other possible allergens could be the problem. As has been posted here recently, Joan Fisher's presentation on colitis at the ILCA conference would be germaine here. She mentions dairy as a problem, although other possibilities are oversupply of mother with accompanying "formilk-hindmilk"
imbalance for lack of a better term. She also has moms use Lactaid drops directly on baby's tongue and states that she has had mothers tell her this made a big difference, though she couldn't say for sure how or why. Several mothers told her though, with the drops, baby was happy, without them,
baby was fussy. Anyway, I would recommend getting her tape. Her session was Track 5 and she has a website, www.breastfeedinghelp.ca though I have not looked to see what is on it. I would say an elimination diet is in order if all forms of dairy, obvious and hidden are removed from the diet and no
changes after 1-2 weeks. You've all heard me say if you've been on Lactnet for a while that my youngest daughter was extremely allergic to dairy in my diet and when, at 2 months, I finally figured it out (hey, this was 16 years ago) and eliminated all forms from my diet, it took 2 full weeks for
every symptom to disappear, one of the last being little "pimples" on her face which were not the run-of-the-mill newborn fare.

Marsha, who spends a small fortune on Lactaid for my now highly lactose intolerant 16 yr old dd!
