From my wonderful "1942 American Red Cross Home Nursing Handbook":
"All babies, whether breast or bottle fed, thrive better if given certain
other foods, in addition to milk, at an early age. Orange juice is usually
the first food to be introduced. Opinions differ among doctors about the
time to begin giving orange juice, but those who specialize in baby care
usually recommend that it be given when the baby is about 2 to 4 weeks old.
Beginning with a teaspoonful of strained juice diluted with an equal amount
of boiled water, each day, the amount may be gradually increased until the
baby is receiving about 6 tablesponfuls, daily, by the time he is 3 months
old. Tomato juice may be substituted for orange juice if necessary...
Lemon juice and grapefruit juice may also be given in the same amount,
strained and diluted. These juices will probably require a little sugar..."

And we wonder where Aunt Tillie gets her sour expression.

By the way, this book devotes a page and a half to giving a baby an enema.
And toilet training? If you start at 8 or 9 months, and are consistent
about it, your child should be pretty well trained by age two *or three*.
"Training a child in toilet habits requires endless patience on the part of
the mother..."
