HIPAA (in the USA) is a pain in the neck. Not because it requires us to
protect privacy and confidentiality, which we have always had to do.
Because the requirements for privacy and security using on-line
communication are extraordinarily high.

Generally, use of laptops, tablets, and smart phones to collect, store, and
communicate information about our clients and patients does NOT repeat NOT
meet the high standards required by HIPAA. Your texting is a violation.
Your social media platforms are a violation. Your Cloud-based storage of
client charts that only YOU ever saw are forbidden. And getting your
client/patients to consent to such use of Cloud-based communication does
NOT excuse or mitigate your legal requirement to keep their private health
information (PHI) secure.

The rules for ***e-mail*** communication are a teensy tiny bit easier than
texting and Cloud storage. Good news: There are two fantastic resources,
largely free, that you can use to learn anything and everything about how
to communicate with your clients using electronic means (your texts, your
email, etc).
