Dear all,

lately there has been discussion on bilirubin and skin-to-skin. Do any of
you have experience with skin-to-skin and simultaneous bilitreatment under
bililights in a hospital setting? Do any of you - working in a hospital -
use the lamp over baby with baby being next to the mother or even resting on
mothers abdomen skin-to-skin? What are the practicalities of this
arrangement? How do you guide the mother (to prevent baby falling off)? The
babys eyes are protected; how about the mother? Has any studies been done on
this type of arrangement in particular? (Apart from the studies on
skin-to-skin, breastfeeding and itīs effect on bililevels)
I have heard of biliblankets. Our headpediatrician is not keen on those, so
our hospital uses bilibeds and/or bililamp over baby with baby in a separate
basinette when baby needs treatment for high bilirubin.

Thankful for ideas/input!

Merete Willis, midwife, Finland
