The discussion on this video has been interesting to follow, and many of
the same points have been brought up here in Italy where it has been
translated. ONe of the most important things to remmber is the dossier
that goes with the video. It is essential to understanding the "why" of
some of the choices made. First of all, it was designed to be used in
training for the BFHI to show that it is possible to do skin-to-skin, in
practically any situation where there is a healthy baby and mother. To
show health care personnel who had never seen this type of "lack of
intervention" before and make them understand that it IS possible. All
the people in the room are part of a group that is doing the 18-hr
course and requested to watch (hence, the mother lying down and not
holding the baby). The comments that Linda Pohl made about cultural
appropriateness are also very helpful in understanding the context.
Reading the dossier is a big help and furnishes a ton of evidence for
immediate skin-to-skin.
