Just was in a seminar by a doctor who is mainly a defense expert in child
abuse cases. I was glad she brought up the possibility child abuse really
being rickets esp. in women with dark skin, but she emphatically with
hand gestures, told eveyrone in room (about 60 lawyers) that breastmilk has
ZERO vit. D. I knew it was wrong and quickly checked and a CDC cite refuting
that, but for political reasons could not challenge her publicly. I did
approach her afterwards and she agreed to say it does not have enough. You
could hear people gasping when she said it and I pointed that it would
discourage people from breastfeeding.

Grrrrrr. And the REASON breastmilk is low in Vit D is because mothers
have low Vit D levels. Children have low Vit D levels. Men have low Vit D
levels. We are a 21st century people with low vitamin D levels.

I'd love to know how many on this list have had their own Vit D levels
checked, and how many who have had them tested found that they were at least
50 or above.

We could prevent a lot of preterm births, especially among African
American mothers if they were supplemented with 6400 I/U Vit D per day. That
would also give adequate amounts in the breastmilk.

Lots and lots of good stuff with Vit D, and yet most people do not take
adequate amounts -- and yet the benefits are legion.

Jan Barger, RN, MA, IBCLC, FILCA (who had a level of 34 which is now up to
62 on 4000 I/U per day....a level high enough to decrease the risk of
breast cancer by 50%).
