Dear Lactnetters, I think it is wise for us to keep in mind breastfeeding is
not just a feeding choice, it is a lifestyle and parenting style choice. It
ties into the larger culture and smaller sub cultures beliefs about women's
bodies and bodily functions and beliefs about children and what it means to
be a parent. Unfortunately Patience and Persistence are not virtues that
are widely respected in American Culture. I see so many women who want to
pump their milk and give it in a bottle. They know breastmilk is best, but it
is too time consuming and inconvenient to breastfeed......There would still
be reasons for women not to breastfeed even if we did not provide formula for
mother's through WIC. Just worked with a wonderful woman who had an abundance
of milk and patience to help her succesfully breastfeed her 6 day old
daughter, even though the Peds nurses were encouraging her to give a bottle,
baby had a cold and was admitted for R/O sepsis w/u. If I had not been there
that baby would have gone home formula fed because as a first time mom she
would have listenend to the so called "expert" Peds RN. Lisa Mooney RN BSN
(soon to be IBCLC)
