Hi, All: I'm a little behind in my readings due to an unexpected 2 day stay in
our cardiac unit. Fortunately, all is well, and thanks, Kris, for providing
coverage one floor up on OB! The cardiac nurses threatened to take my
phone and the computer away! I really got to thinking after reading the study
on epidurals - most epidural "cocktails" in the USA do contain Fentanyl - have
any of you ever been given Fentanyl? Most conscious sedation "cocktails"
also contain Fentanyl and I had the pleasure a couple of years ago to have
been given conscious sedation during my pacemaker implant. I was given
Vistaril (another narcotic sedative) and Fentanyl for the procedure and being
conscious is about the only coherent thought one has when on this
medication. I couldn't have told anyone which end was up, although I was
totally aware of what was going on in the room. I realized later that the
surgeon must have told the nurse to give me more after I uttered an expletive
when I heard her say what "teeny" veins I had as she was attempting to
thread the 2 leads down into my heart because I remember waking up
sometime later still in the OR. I spent the rest of the day sleeping off the
effects of the anesthesia. So... leaves me wondering how co-ordinated one
should expect a neurologically immature newborn to be after being exposed to
Fentanyl for hours on end thru mom's epidural and how long it should take for
the effects to wear off.
