Many thanks to all the replies for my dilemma with the senator. Yesterday's
meeting went quite well. He was intrigued by the cost savings estimations
of bfing, the fact that 12 states have protective legislation for bfing (3
border us!!), and the best reaction we received was in regards to his
comment that his wife did not bf & his children are just great. We did not
negate that fact but rather stated it is not fair to deny today's parents of
the pro-bfing info we now have from research. I do not suspect he ever
looked at it that way before based on his positive reaction to that.

He never did touch deeply on the "indecent exposure" issue: He acknowledged
that we are a more mobile generation than his (He late 60ish). We provided
great pictures of discreet public nursing - I especially liked this
suggestion! It might have nipped the issue in the bud!

His aide who was present ( does research for the health/human services
committee) was very pro-bfing, his wife bf & his main focus was on the
health benefits of bfing.

The one point the senator kept coming back to was no one (in PA) has ever
been prosecuted for public bfing & he doesn't believe it would ever happen.
We tried to emphasize the reassurance women would feel from a protective
law. He didn't seem to get the connection of uncomfortableness with public
bfing & lower rates of bf duration. If the Surgeon General's goal is for
50% bfing rate at age 6 mo., we need to make women feel it is a publically
acceptable activity.

Again I am most grateful for this forum and your feedback!
