I also found that when I worked in a hospital that the staff blamed the
parents for everything -- even when the staff was clearly in the wrong. This
attitude keeps people from improving and growing in job skills.

I also see a problem with the push for a lower credential. I constantly hear
complaints from other IBCLCs about the low skill level of some of our peers.
I do not believe that every person who applies to take the exam is carefully
evaluated and checked upon for accuracy of their claims regarding BC hours,
CE credits, etc.

And at this point, there is no evaluation of one's clinical skills or
attitude about breastfeeding. There is no evaluation of one's understanding
of our code of ethics or standards of practice either.

What I want to know is what can be done about improving things? This
profession is essentially self policed. One can make a complaint to the
IBLCE, but from what I have experienced they have no "teeth."
