Dear Pam, such a sad story. Glad it had a good outcome. Baby-friendly
doesn't mean we put on our BF blinders and think if baby is "at breast" he
is feeding. Sounds so similar to NY case where mom was arrested for
murder. BFing "all the time". I had an almost tragedy, baby had lost 11+%
in 4 days (mom had c-sec) and nobody questioned it, except me when she
contacted me a few days later! One of those cases where I walked into
kitchen and made a bottle! Taught her how to pump, got baby's intake up,
turned around in a few days - but was heading for the dumper because baby
"was feeding at breast". Fortunately mom had picked up on the facts about
output and questioned little output on day 8 -good grief. Ps went ahead
and BF for months.

I'm sure everyone on this list has similar tales. I spoke with the mat
super at the hosp she delivered at. I don't know if it made any
difference. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
PPS: please don't start another discussion about % weight loss! This was
significant in 4 days in hospital, BFing didn't begin right away and supply
was not protected. It won't go home and just "fix itself." The hospitals
main clue should have been baby's output and NO observation of a feed! How
come we can recognize that satiated look and others can't?
