Dear friends,

I do see some unwanted points in the way Medela presents is bottles and nipples, claiming that the WHO supports breastmilk feeding. Of course, WHO supports breastfeeding. But in absence of mother WHO too does encourage to pump and have the baby been fed breastmilk rather than breastmilk substitutes. Bottles and nipples are a convenient way to feed a baby that can not be at breast at that time. And practically all alternatives to at-breast-feeding can be the cause for confusion or preference in the baby.
So, in part, I am with Linda in not completely understanding the fuss about Medela's campaign and trustworthiness.
Yes, I would prefer pumps to come with non-bottle-like containers (like the ancient Ameda Egnell did 20+ years ago) and leave it up to mom and or caretaker to provide for means of feeding the breastmilk to the child. But I honestly do not see how Medela is endangering breastfeeding by offering bottles with the pumps. As far as I know the do not market the bottles as individual commercial items, only in combination with pumps.

And, Linda, I certainly don't think anyone would name you stupid for thinking for yourself and questioning things that don't make sense to you. Keep on thinking and rethinking!

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands, getting ready to visit an international conference on donormilk, featuring Jack Newman among others.

Subject: [LACTNET] Medela and marketing practices

Please be kind when replying to me. I know I am setting myself up for
attack. I am also setting myself up to be seen as totally stupid! And
 yet,
that doesnt stop me. Hmmmm. :-)

I must admit that some of the jargon of the WHO code is a bit confusing
 to
me.

I want to understand how medela is violating the code in their brochure
"breastmilk feeding and storage set".
The code (4.2) states that no advertisement should "idealize the use of
breastmilk substitutes". But medela's brochure is advertising a bottle
 for
the collecting, storing, freezing and feeding of breastmilk. (not
 formula)
And then there is an entire paragraph where Medela talks about
 breastmilk
being the best choice for babies and the optimal nutrition for the
 growth,
development and health of babies. It states that once breastfeeding is
established, this system can be used as another means of getting the
breastmilk into the babies belly.

What am I not getting? Or what part of the code am I not seeing?
  Please
"teach" me, don't "attack" me!

Thanks,
Linda Hill RN, IBCLC
Austin,TX
