This response is a little late because in my haste to send it, I used the
wrong Lactnet address- sorry.
I'm responding to several posts last week expressing frustration and distrust
of the March of Dimes because they used a baby bottle in a fund raising
activity. This subject came up back in 2000 and I called my local chapter as well
as the national office, and was assured that a directive had gone out to all
local chapters, reminding them that the MOD supported breastfeeding and
instrucing them NOT to use bottles, pacifiers, etc in their print releases and fund
raisers. I know, some of their print resources could show stronger support, but
they feature breastfeeding in every issue of the "Mama" magazine and support
the AAP and WHO recommendations.
Local chapters may not be up-to-date on the national policy and directives
and it is up to us to keep an active dialogue going. The local chapters are a
valuable resource for support of educational programs. The MOD is sponsoring a 5
year, $75million campaign to find the causes and ways to prevent prematurity.
Our local consortium received an educational award by emphasizing that
breastmilk and breastfeeding should be the standard of care for those pre-term
babies that are already here. We've arranged for a neonatologists who is also
IBCLC, to make a presentation in several NICUs about the use of breastmilk as the
standard of care in the unit.
It's also worth educating the staff prople at your local chapter. Most of
them are fund-raisers , not health professionals and need input into their
advisory and community boards.
It's the consistent message about breastfeeding that has to be heard.
