Karen,
I too hate plastic parenting. At the hospital where I work, I have made some
inroads and continue to do so. I will be having a second IBCLC, a friend
I've known for many years, working w/ me to jobshare, starting this week. We
have alot of work to do. One thing on our list is to fix up the little room
where families in nicu can go to bf. currently it is a sterile jail cell
looking room.
One other thing that really bothers me: babies are dressed in long-sleeved
T-shirts with ends that fold over to cover the infant's hands. The nurses
routinely fold these over and cover the hands and it is like a strait-jacket
of sorts. The first thing I do is unwrap the babies, explaining to the
parents why, and then I unwrap the hands, which is no easy feat. I explian
the babies need to feel the skin and their environment and be able to put
hand to mouth. The parents worry that the babies will scratch their faces,
the nurses worry too, and some babies do, but well cut or peel the
fingernails if so.
I think this impacts bf. I just hate the tightly swaddled babies in
strait-jacket tops. I understand the for-swaddling argument, but I guess I
just wasn't one who like swaddling. And I did have fussy babies, but I just
walked them, nursed them etc. Never swaddled.

New Orleans Louisiana, s.e. USA
