Ohmigosh! It happened for the second time today, only more dramatically.

Tina Smillie was the speaker for the Ohio Lactation Consultant
Association’s 13th Annual Breastfest the end of April and talked about
baby-led latch. She had video from her practice to show us what she
meant. So I decided to try it—nothing dramatic. Put baby skin to skin
on mom’s chest and mom follows him wherever he goes.

Today I had a consult with mom and 5 week old son who latched beautifully
the first couple days (according to mom), then his bili went up to “15”
and the hospital made her take baby off the breast and give him formula.
He’s not latched much since then. She’s been pumping and giving him
mostly expressed milk, but using some ABM also. She called because she
wants to quit pumping and get him to breast—because “pumping and bottle
feeding is exhausting.” I hauled my trusty scale to her 19th floor
apartment (by elevator, thank goodness), and had her undress baby to
diaper and take her shirt and bra off to do skin to skin while I got the
scale out and set up (so I could weigh pre- and post-feed in case we
could get him to breast). Well this baby did a couple flops down mom’s
right side and latched on RIGHT NOW. Mom was amazed, tears in her eyes,
and the scale just sat there. No pre- and post-feed weights for this
little guy! He did this several more times and would only latch when he
was in control. When mom tried to help him, he cried loudly and would
have none of it! I know this won’t work every time, but boy, when it
does, it’s like you waved a magic wand over the baby. I love it!!!

Warmly,
