There is a conference presentation (is probably now a published paper) about
research  done where a lactulose/mannitol test was used to investigate
whether there was possible damage to the baby's gut from milk inflammatory
cytokines (present in milk due to mastitis). They did not find any
relationship between the sodium or cytokine levels and increased gut
permeability however gut permeability was increased in infants who were
receiving mixed feeds as opposed to exclusive breastfeeding.

I expect if you can get this paper (if  published yet) there may be some
primary references attached that cover initial studies on infant gut
permeability (?)
