I am a La Leche League Leader, co-leader of Nikki Simmons. Please call with
any responses to Nikki Simmons at 573-690-7229 ASAP. There is a mom who has a
viral infection that has killed off all her bone marrow, blood count only 4,
and has had four blood transfusions and is awaiting marrow transfusion. She
has child under 1year who is exclusively breastfed and she is prone to
mastitis. Part of the medical staff is supportive of her continuing
breastfeeding but a new Dr. today said she must stop immediately because Dr.
is afraid mom will bleed to death because of breastfeeding. I am sending this
request for Nikki because she has no access to computer of breastfeeding info
right now. She apologizes for the sketchy info but was given the info from a
family nurse via telephone. So there are two questions: first, While mom's
body in recovering from infection is it ok to continue breastfeeding or are
any of Dr's fears of bleeding while breastfeeding valid?, and second, assuming
mom survives, Can mom breastfeed while waiting for marrow transfusion and/or
while recovering from transfusion? This is very dire situtation, mom's
prognosis is not good, so please if you have any info on this topic call Nikki
ASAP!! Note: this is a Menonite mother who is ill. You can also email
Michele at [log in to unmask] and I can call Nikki with any info.
Thank-you for your prompt attention. Michele
