How about the immunological basis for skin to skin care of infants,
especially premies in NICUs? That being the entero-mammary connection, or
as I explain it to parents: "in a hospital environment, your baby is being
exposed to different germs than you are. When you hold your baby
skin-to-skin, s/he gives you some of those germs, and within 3-5 days, your
body will put the antibodies that provide SPECIFIC protection to those germs
into your milk. It's custom made protection against disease." I also point
out that for any illness mom has ever had or been exposed to, the antibodies
that protect against that will be in her milk as well. This little set of
facts usually elicits dropped jaws and a bog "wow!" from everyone in the
room.

Subject: "Gee Whiz" Lactation facts

Hi all,
We are putting together a poster presentation for the nurses' education
at our hospital. Our clinical director has suggested a poster of "Gee Whiz"
lactation facts, such as male lactation, induced lactation for adopted
babies, or using breast milk to treat conjunctivitis or ear infections. I'm
sure we can all think of many more. I was wondering if any on you would
like to share other ideas that you would like to see included on such a
poster. The more "Gee Whiz, I didn't know that!" kind of thing, the better!
    Thanks,
    Kris Rogers, RN, BSN, IBCLC
