Dear Pat,

Interesting story you have there.

1. How are they diagnosing mom's ulcers?? did the GI doc do an endoscopy?
is the best way to tell if ulcer or not. May be an option for this mom
so she doesnt have to take meds just for the sake of trying!

2. If she does indeed have an ulcer, Cimetidine (tagamet) is an approved
drug as per Briggs and the Academy of Pediatrics for use in BF moms. As
far as Zantac is concerned, would not have much problem with it since we
use it frequently (iv and po) in infants and even premies!!!

My recommendation would be to make a firm diagnosis, and treat
appropriately. A great mimiker of ulcers is irritable bowel disease. SO
while the docs are fighting it our your patient may want to try more
fiber in her diet. Totally harmless and worth a shot especially if it
makes her feel better!

Good luck.
