Elizabeth:

When after the feeding is the mom experiencing the breast pain? I have
heard of warm soaks after a feed suggested but do not personally know if it
is effective. I believe Dr. Jack Newman was the source of that
recommendation. At a presentation by him in 1995 Reynauds was briefly
discussed as an overall part of his sore nipples lecture. He did mention
the use of 2% nitroglycerin paste as an extreme treatment - using it 1st
immediately after the feed, then if it was effective, wait longer to apply
after subsequent feeds. I personally (as a former ICU nurse) am really
unsure about this one - no research jumped out at me to support this after a
quick scan on the conference bib - and I like the least invasive approaches.
I would NOT go for this suggestion without thoroughly investigating it.
Does anyone else have more info on this one - research, harm to baby?
