First off, a huge thank you for the archives as they are so easy to access
and browse through. Much better than in the previous years. Since this is
the first time I have looked through the archives and haven't found the
answer, I need to ask some advice from all you wise ones.

An intro first, I am a RN, Certified Childbirth Educator and CLC in
Gaithersburg, MD. I have three girls, 9 yo, 5.5yo and 13 months. Married
for 12 blissful years to Lenny who is an emergency room physician's
assistant.

Now on to the question. I have a second time mom who suffers from
infrequent deep breast pain on the right side after nursing. The pain was
enough to stop nursing her 2 year old daughter at 8 months. She has no
recall of when the pain started during the last postpartum as she has
blocked out the total experience. Her son is now 4 months old, the pain
started within the last month. She is keeping a diary for me today to
monitor when the pain occurs. The pain lasts after a feeding for about an
hour or so. It is a sharp deep breast pain that comes in waves. She is
taking ibuprofen when the pain starts. She is right handed with no change
in activities. She has a cracked nipple on the right side but the pain
started prior to the sore. At her postpartum visit, she was given the
birth control, Micronor. If this pain continues, she will stop nursing.
At this time she is not ready to finish the nursing experience but does
have flash backs from the last experience and does not want that to happen
again.

Some thoughts that I have had are: the intro of the bcp leading to hormone
shifts or a drop in the milk production, muscle pain due to poor latch on
and possible teething, the beginning stages of thrush vs. mastitis but
nothing seems to fit into the exact picture.

Thanks for any suggestions or advice you may have. Wanted to see a latch
on but since she "has had so much experience, I don't feel this is
necessary". :( Thanks in advance.
