Truby King was responsible for the notorious “timetables” prescribed for new mothers. He was very popular in England in the forties and I was brought up strictly to the clock, when to eat, when to sit on the pot, when to sleep. Much of my generation needed therapy when we ourselves became mothers!
Even when my first son was born in the sixties I received a pamphlet when I left the hospital.
Timetable for mothers:
Rise at 6. Feed baby 10 minutes each side. Put him back to sleep
Make hubby`s breakfast and make sure he has an ironed shirt for work
Wash nappies and hang them out to dry
Prepare basics for hubby`s dinner
10.0. Bath baby and feed him 10 minutes each side. Put him back to sleep
10.30. Clean house and take baby for walk
2.0 Feed baby 10 minutes each side. Put him back to sleep
Iron hubby`s shirts and other clothing.
Take baby for another walk
6.0. Feed baby 10 minutes each side
Wash baby and put him to bed in time for hubby to come home to quiet calm house
7.0 Serve hubby his dinner and hear about his day
Wash up dishes and clean kitchen. Fold laundry
10.0 Feed baby 10 minutes each side. Put him back to sleep
2.0 a.m. If baby still wakes up at night, feed him 10 minutes each side but try to regulate him to drop that night feed as soon as possible.

I am not joking!
