You can check in the archives for posts about my experiences as a disaster volunteer with formula donations.? I suggest that everyone contact your Emergency Preparedness Director in your county and voice your concerns. Unfortunately, emergency personnel is not trained in lactation management, and often inherit lists and procedures that are handed down, year after year. This is a wonderful area to provide some education, and resources. You can even take the next step and offer to conduct an inservice for Shelter Managers and Nursing staff ( most often from the Health Dept or local hospital) on how to support breastfeeding moms and babies in emergency shelters.
