Valerie,

About the spelling of the IBLCE Board, you said "I can't seem to get it
right no matter what I do." I used to have the same trouble, but years ago
JoAnne Scott helped me avoid the most common mistake ("IBCLE") by telling me
always to look for "LC".

Both of the abbreviations "IBCLC" and "IBLCE" contain the combination "LC."
Not surprising, as both abbreviations refer to lactation consultants. So we
just have to put the "LC" in the right place.

If we're talking about the person, the "LC," then the "I-B-C" modifies the
"LC."
If we're talking about the board, then the "L-C" modifies the examiners and
tells who they examine.

So we begin both abbreviations by saying "I-B," and after the "B" comes the
decision point. Are we talking about the LC? Then we stick in "C" and put
the "L-C" at the end. But if we're talking about the board, we stick the
"L-C" in here and finish with "E" to tell what the board does.

I find that "I-B-C-L-C" rolls easily off my tongue, while "I-B-L-C-E" takes
more thought and requires a minute ("my-newt") pause while I remember to put
the "LC" in the middle.

Maybe it's just easier to call IBLCE "the Board" and use the initials to
refer to the practitioner.

Now if I could only prevail on my colleagues not to say "Ib-ul-see" when
they mean "Eye-bee-see-ell-see," I'd be happy...

And I do agree with you on the issue of patenting. I have sent an email to
IBLCE to say so. See my next Lactnet post.
