Rice can be frozen as well, and works very well, not just for edema but for lots
of other things.  I make little bags, out of 100% cotton and sew them up.  My
kids use them for little injuries, instead of running to get a bandaid, and I've
used them for plugged ducts, fevers, after a long day on my eyes, etc.
