Unless you think there has been some drastic change in how humans
function over a short time, one can assume there has always been a
low volume of colostrum the first few days (compared with the
production of mature milk later). I usually point out that it is a
benefit to baby that he/she gets a few days at the start to master
the technique of nursing before having to learn how to handle large
volumes of milk. If baby needed more at the start, it would be
there. Otherwise humans would have died out as a species
generations ago!!! This usually gets the parents thinking and
reassures most that it is OK that baby isn't downing ounces of
colostrum the first few days. I find it gets most professionals
thinking also. However, there are always a few peds who like to
tell moms to supplement with an ounce (ouch!) of formula after every
nursing "until the milk comes in". We keep trying to get them to
change, but I'm not holding my breath!

Winnie
