Given that all the research on long-term breastfeeding has been done in the
US prior to my study (and therefore my thoughts on what mothers were likely
to say were based on the N American experience) I was relatively surprised
to see how infrequently Australian dyads use "code words" for breastfeeding.
It's just not done much here it seems. The other big difference I noticed
between N American and Aussie experience is that while US research has found
that a large % of women continue to breastfeed past infancy because of a
"natural philosophy" this is not the case for Aussie mums. I think it
indicates that we've got a different sort of population in Australia vs the
US and that perhaps long-term breastfeeding is less marginalised in
Australia.
