Lynette wrote in regarding hypersensitive nipples.

I have pain with nursing IF I don't
rinse baby's saliva off EVERY TIME after nursing and then apply a
zinc oxide ointment. Sensitive to baby's saliva. This took a LONG
TIME to figure out. Also, some nursing pads will cause the same
soreness (But not Lansinoh's or Medela's - I think some of the
others (like J&J and Gerber) have some kind of glue within the pad
that irritates me). Oddly the cloth pads don't seem to do as well
for me either. I do have sensitive skin in general.

I REALLY want to encourage people to help the nursing mom keep looking
for what is bothering her nipples. Just because it takes months to
figure out doesn't mean that she is just too sensitive or has a low
pain threshold or is emotionally uncomfortable with nursing. Not to
say that her feelings toward nursing shouldn't be assessed, but I don't
want that to be a "wastebasket" diagnosis for someone who's discomfort
 is hard to diagnose.
