Hello,

I'm new to Lactnet and would like to introduce myself. My name is Tricia
Palleja and I'm a LLL Leader in northern Illinois. I've breastfed my
three kids, and I've been a Leader for almost 5 years now. I'm thinking
about becoming a Lactation Consultant. But I'm going to work on it
slowly, so it might be a while. My kids are still young, so they take up
most of my time. I used to be on Lactnet, but that was several years
ago.

I also have a question that I was hoping some of you very smart ladies
might be able to help with. I got a call tonight from a new mother. 1st
baby, 7 days old, girl, vaginal birth, no complications. Baby passed all
her meconium in the first two days. Then went four days without a bowl
movement. Mother seems very nervous and frustrated with breastfeeding in
general. After four days took baby to doctor who inserted a rectal
thermometer into her baby's rectum. Shortly after the baby had a large
yellow, seedy bm. The mother said that the baby has had many wet
diapers, more than 6 per day.

The mother had a vaginal birth, but has been constipated since the
birth. She has been on a stool softener, Colace? or Colase? every day.
Has anyone heard of this stool softener interfering with a bf baby's
stooling? She says the baby is very gassy, too. Also, she says that she
is worried because the baby constantly falls asleep while nursing. Well,
she's only 7 days old so I'm thinking that's pretty normal. I think she
just needs to feed her frequently. Also, she says she is pumping with a
Medela double pump, but is only getting an ounce or two of milk. But it
could be that she just fed the baby, but that seems like a red flag to
me. She never felt engorgement, but did say that the milk changed from
colstrum to whiteish milk a couple days ago. Mother shows no signs of
retained placenta.

One other piece of the puzzle is that the baby hasn't gained any weight
yet that we know of. Now she's only 7 days. At birth 5 1b., 9 oz., at 3
days 5 lb. 5 oz., at 5 days - 5 lb., 3 oz. And baby will be weighed
again tomorrow.

I researched the archives under stool softener and colace and found a
couple posts that mentioned the possibility of stool softeners causing
slow weight gain in bf babies. Has anyone out there heard of this
before? I know this mom would really appreciate any help or advice from
anyone out there. She seems very frustrated and nervous since this is
her first baby. She keeps getting vastly different advice from every
doctor and lactation consultant she talks to, so she says anyway. And
they have her coming into the hospital every other day to weigh her
baby, and she is about to give up, I think. Thank you everyone for any
help you can give.

Tricia Palleja
