You don't have to go back to 40's, lol, I was born in the late 60's, 
and was given at the high age of 3 weeks, exactly according to 
recommendations of that time, juice from fresh berries and smashed 
fruits and vitamins. Mothers were to breastfeed (or to bottlefeed) 5 
times per 24 h, and if the baby got hungry in the mean time, a bottle 
of water with honey/sugar in it was given. Now you won't be surprised 
to hear my mother's milk was gone by 4 weeks ;) .

Btw, my husband was obviously so used to his sugar water bottles, lol, 
that he used to drink sugar water until he was nearly 30, then he 
changed sugar water to juice, maybe because I kept on teasing him ;)
