I believe the comment was made in the context of IBCLC being
recognized as a profession -- one of the requirements of which is the
original research coming from those within the profession.  If nursing
was based on medical research rather than nursing research it would
not be an independent profession.  As long as the brilliant minds at
the forefront of breastfeeding research are not primarily IBCLCs the
credential will not be seen as a profession with its own independent
body of knowledge.

I don't think the comment was meant to lessen the contributions of
others, more a wish that IBCLCs could count them with their numbers.
At least that was my interpretation :)
