Why is it necessary to pump at all in the first 24hrs?  Why could we not suggest that moms hand express?  It is a vital skill that all moms should be familar with and from experience, I have found that they are able to obtain more colostrum using this method.  Usually if needed, pumping can be added on Day 2.
