Dear Fellow Lactnetters:

Just a brief introduction as I come out of lurcking to post a question. My
name is Christine Thompson. I am an RN who works in the OB dept. of a
small, rural hospital in Independence, KS. I have been helping
breastfeeding moms for the past 4 years in this hospital setting. I
completed a course offered by the Center of Breastfeeding in September of
1998 and they are the people who led me to this list. I am preparing to
sit for the IBCLC exam in 2001.

The situation is as follows:

Mother contacted me regarding weaning issues for a 6 month old baby. When
I questioned her further she stated that the physicians assistant who cares
for her and her family had recommended weaning due to mom's history of
major depression and needing to go back on her medication (she had stopped
them during pregnancy and during the first 6 months of breastfeeding). Mom
is very reluctant to wean as she feels very strongly about health benefits
and bonding obtained from breastfeeding. Baby is 6 months old, weighs
20lbs, has started eating some solids and juices. In the past mom has used
Prozac 20mg daily and Trazadone 100mg at bedtime to manage depression. She
states that the trazadone was added because she has increased difficulty
sleeping when taking Prozac.

I have searched the archives and checked in my 1998 edition of Hale's
book. There was much information about Prozac and I learned a great deal
about this medication from the archives. I discussed with her the
possibility of talking to the P.A. about using Zoloft or Paxil instead.
She said she had tried Zoloft in the past without success and is
considering Paxil. She would prefer to stick with the medications that she
knows work for her. I was not able to find any information about trazadone
(Desyrel)in the archives. I did read about it in Hale. Mom wanted me to
find information specifically about the use of these two medications in
combination so that she can share with her P.A. and spouse. I appreciate
your help, you may e-mail me privately or post to list.
